January 21, 2008 - Dream Potential by Charleita Richardson. In honor of Martin Luther King Day, R-MC graduate Charleita Richardson will discuss how to best utilize your potential to make your dreams become a reality, and also to help others along the way, free. February 13, 2008 - Dar He: The Lynching of Emmett Till. During this play, internationally recognized actor Mike Wiley chronicles the murder, trial and unbelievable confession of the men accused of Till’s lynching, free. Frank E. Now through February 15 - Nationally known sculptor Pati Beachley will share her most recent works in this unique exhibit. Beachley is an asst prof of sculpture, metalsmithing, drawing and design at Seton Hill University in PA. Her metal works have been exhibited and collected extensively throughout the U.S. The exhibit is on display Monday-Friday, 10:00am to 4:00pm in the Flippo Gallery, Pace-Armistead Hall. Note: gallery will be closed Feb 5–Feb 10. It will be open in conjunction with symphony, theatre, and choral performances.
March 5, 2008 - Beyond the Beat and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture. Documentary examining representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned activist, free. Frank E. March 20, 2008 - Special Presentation by Greg Glassner from the Herald-Progress at the at Richard S. Gillis Library. Sponsored by the Pamunkey Regional Library (7:00pm). 804-798-4072.
Through end of March - Randolph-Macon College is pleased to feature the works of Ashland artists in honor of Ashland’s 150th Anniversary celebration. Currently the works of Susannah Wagner Merritt are on display in the R-MC Welcome Center at 300 Henry Street. The exhibit includes seventeen acrylic paintings featuring Ashland and Richmond landmarks, as well as, scenes from Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia Beach and Charlottesville. Color and texture are used to express the landscape and mood of each unique location. The exhibit is open to the public Monday – Friday from 9:00am–4:30pm through the month of March. March 2 – April 18 - Animal Exhibition (art exhibit) – Twenty-nine local artists, all with an artistic interest in animals and animal behavior, will showcase their best animal works this spring, including paintings, works on paper, ceramics and sculpture. Public opening reception: March 2, 2008, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a special performance by the R-MC Chamber Choir at 2:30 p.m. The Flippo Gallery, located inside Pace-Armistead Hall, is open Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on weekends by appointment. Note: The gallery will be closed March 21 through March 30 for the college’s spring break. The gallery will also be open in conjunction with symphony, theatre, and choral performances. March 10 - April 11, 2008 - The Best of R-MC Study Abroad in Photos. In taking the time to enjoy this exhibit, visitors clearly will see R-MC students have a lot to say as they showcase photographs of their study abroad explorations around the world, free. April 17, 2008 - 6th Annual Poetry Celebration at the Richard S. Gillis Library at 7:00pm. 804-798-4072. Overall winners are published in the Herald-Progress. Everyone from kindergarten to adult may participate. Anyone can come on that evening to share poetry that they have written or they can read a favorite poem they treasure written by any poet.
