Plant a tree to celebrate Ashland's 150th birthday

    By BILL DORAN (Herald Progress)

The Ashland Sesquicentennial year is more than a series of celebratory parties. It also involves beautifying the Town.

One such project is the Plant 150 project. The goal of the project is to sell and plant 150 trees in Ashland.

Organizers are looking for groups, such as scouts, youth groups, etc. to volunteer to help plant trees and clean up the parks around town. This will be a major undertaking and all able hands are needed.

Monica Klisz is the chairwoman for the project. "We will be having an Arbor Day ceremony on Saturday April 26, from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. at Town Hall," said Klisz. "We will be planting the town Christmas Tree - a Norway Spruce - and have some fun events for the kids. We'll also have information on tree planting and care and kick off our Plant150 project where we hope to sell and plant 150 trees in Ashland for the fall birthday celebration.

"We'll offer five different varieties for sale ($15 for a 3-4 foot sapling) that will be delivered Oct. 11. Right now we are working with Colesville Nursery and are expecting to sell Dogwoods, Red Buds, American Holly, Red Maple, and Willow Oaks. We'll have a group available to plant that day in hopes of getting all the trees in before the birthday the next weekend."

Individuals or businesses can also buy and donate their tree to be planted in a public area in Ashland.

"Also on April 26, starting right after the Arbor Day ceremony, we'll be having a cleanup of DeJarnette and Carter parks," said Klisz. "Right now we are looking for groups and individuals to participate in this event as well."

People or organizations can also plant their own tree to commemorate the 150th. "If they let us know we'll get a picture and track it," concluded Klisz. "We will give them a commemorative ribbon to tie onto their tree."

If you would like to volunteer or need more information, contact Klisz at (804) 798-1366.
